Things to see in Galway & Connemara

From the lanes of the Latin Quarter to Kylemore Abbey, the Twelve Bens and the clifftop fort of Dún Aonghasa.

Galway city itself is about atmosphere rather than monuments — half a day covers the sights, and the rest is pubs, food and people-watching. The landscapes to the west are what you will remember.

1 The Latin Quarter & Spanish Arch

The Latin Quarter & Spanish Arch

The pedestrian spine of Shop Street, High Street and Quay Street runs from Eyre Square down to the River Corrib, lined with painted shopfronts, buskers and pubs. Look for Lynch’s Castle, a fortified merchant’s house that is now a bank, and the medieval church of St Nicholas. At the bottom, the Spanish Arch is a remnant of the sixteenth-century city wall, beside the free Galway City Museum.

Practical: Free. Allow two hours on foot. A Saturday market fills the lane beside St Nicholas’ church.

2 The Claddagh, the Long Walk & Salthill

The Claddagh, the Long Walk & Salthill

Across the river from the Spanish Arch lay the Claddagh, once a separate fishing village and the origin of the Claddagh ring. The view back to the coloured houses of the Long Walk is Galway’s postcard. From here a seafront path leads about 2 km to Salthill, where tradition demands that you kick the wall at the end of the promenade before turning back.

Practical: Free. About 1–1.5 hours to walk the promenade and back; buses also run to Salthill.

3 Kylemore Abbey

Kylemore Abbey

Built in the 1860s as a romantic castle by a wealthy English doctor, Kylemore has been home to a community of Benedictine nuns since 1920. The setting — grey turrets mirrored in a lake under a wooded mountain — is one of the most photographed in Ireland. Visits take in restored rooms, a miniature neo-Gothic church and a large Victorian walled garden.

Practical: About 1 h 15 min from Galway by car. Ticketed; allow 2–3 hours. A shuttle bus links the abbey and the garden.

4 Connemara National Park & the Twelve Bens

Connemara National Park & the Twelve Bens

The park at Letterfrack protects about 2,000 hectares of bog, heath and mountain. The marked trail up Diamond Hill (about 7 km for the full loop, 2.5–3 hours) is steep in its upper part but rewards with a panorama of the Twelve Bens, Kylemore and the island-strewn coast.

Practical: Free entry and parking; visitor centre open seasonally. Wear proper footwear — the summit is exposed and often windy.

5 Clifden & the Sky Road

Clifden & the Sky Road

Clifden is Connemara’s lively little market town. The Sky Road is a 16 km loop to the west that climbs high above Clifden Bay, passing the gateway to the ruined Clifden Castle. South of town a memorial marks where Alcock and Brown landed after the first non-stop transatlantic flight in 1919.

Practical: Free. Allow 45 minutes to drive the loop with stops; it is also a fine cycle. The road is narrow — pull in for oncoming traffic.

6 The Aran Islands & Dún Aonghasa

The Aran Islands & Dún Aonghasa

Inishmore (Inis Mór), Inishmaan and Inisheer lie across the mouth of Galway Bay: bare limestone, well over a thousand kilometres of stone walls, and Irish as the daily language. On Inishmore, the semicircular stone fort of Dún Aonghasa stands on the edge of a sheer 100-metre cliff with no barrier. Most visitors hire a bicycle at the pier in Kilronan; minibus tours and pony traps are the alternatives.

Practical: Ferries from Rossaveel all year and from Doolin in season; a seasonal ferry also sails from Galway city. Dún Aonghasa is an OPW site with a small charge, about 20 minutes’ walk uphill from the visitor centre.
