Galway faces the Atlantic and gets more rain than the east — some rain falls on well over half the days of the year. It rarely matters in a city built around pubs and music, but for Connemara and the islands you want a clear day, so build in some flexibility.
Season by season
Spring (March–May)
Fresh and bright between showers; Connemara’s gorse turns yellow and the Aran ferries move to fuller timetables. May is often the driest month.
Summer (June–August)
Long evenings and back-to-back festivals. The city is packed in the second half of July. The best season for island trips and for swimming at the Blackrock diving tower in Salthill.
Autumn (September–October)
Students return, the oyster festival opens the native-oyster season and Connemara’s bogs turn russet. Usually still mild.
Winter (November–February)
Stormy spells and short days, but the pubs are at their cosiest and the Christmas market fills Eyre Square. Some Connemara attractions and island services reduce hours.

Crowds & booking ahead
The arts festival and race week make late July the busiest and dearest time of the year — wonderful if you have booked, miserable if you have not. Weekends are lively all year thanks to hen and stag parties. For Kylemore Abbey and the Aran ferries, mornings are quietest.
