King John’s Castle and Thomond Bridge on the River Shannon in Limerick
Republic of Ireland · euro (€)

Limerick & Shannon

The Shannon region is where many transatlantic visitors first set foot in Ireland: a riverside city with a great Norman castle, flanked by a banqueting tower house and one of the country’s prettiest villages.

Limerick, Ireland’s third-largest city, stands where the River Shannon becomes tidal. Vikings founded it, the Normans fortified it with King John’s Castle, and the eighteenth century gave it Newtown Pery, a handsome grid of Georgian terraces. It is a rugby-mad, unpretentious place that has smartened up considerably — and Frank McCourt’s memoir Angela’s Ashes, set in its lanes, made it known around the world.

Half an hour away is Shannon Airport, once the refuelling stop for every transatlantic flight and the birthplace of duty-free shopping and Irish coffee. Between the two is Bunratty Castle, a fully furnished fifteenth-century tower house with a folk park of reconstructed cottages. South-west of the city, Adare has a main street of thatched cottages and a famous manor hotel. The region makes a calm first or last night, and a practical base: the Cliffs of Moher are about an hour and a quarter away.

Highlights

  • King John’s Castle — a thirteenth-century fortress on the Shannon with an interactive exhibition.
  • The Hunt Museum — a private collection running from Bronze Age gold to Picasso.
  • Bunratty Castle & Folk Park — medieval rooms by day, banquets by night.
  • Adare — thatch, abbeys and afternoon tea.
  • The Milk Market — Limerick’s Saturday food market.
  • Lough Gur — a lake ringed by 6,000 years of monuments, including Ireland’s largest stone circle.
