Things to see in Limerick & Shannon

King John’s Castle and Georgian Limerick, Bunratty, Adare, Lough Gur and the Foynes flying-boat museum.

Limerick’s sights divide between the medieval English Town on King’s Island, around the castle and cathedral, and the Georgian quarter to the south. Half a day covers the essentials; the excursions each take two or three hours.

1 King John’s Castle & King’s Island

King John’s Castle & King’s Island

Built on the orders of King John around 1200, the castle guards the crossing of the Shannon with massive drum towers and curtain walls. A modern visitor centre uses projections and excavated remains to tell the story of the sieges of 1642 and 1690–91; the battlements look across to the Treaty Stone, on which the Treaty of Limerick is said to have been signed. A few minutes away is St Mary’s Cathedral, founded in 1168, the city’s oldest building in daily use.

Practical: Castle ticketed, cheaper online; allow 1.5 hours. The cathedral asks a small admission. A riverside walk links both with the city centre in 10–15 minutes.

2 The Hunt Museum, Georgian Limerick & the Milk Market

The Hunt Museum, Georgian Limerick & the Milk Market

In the eighteenth-century Custom House, the Hunt Museum displays the eclectic collection of antiquarians John and Gertrude Hunt: Celtic gold, medieval crucifixes, and works by Renoir, Picasso and Jack B. Yeats. South along O’Connell Street lie the brick terraces of Newtown Pery, with the People’s Park and the restored house at No. 2 Pery Square. The covered Milk Market is the place to be on Saturday morning.

Practical: Hunt Museum ticketed; closed on Mondays for part of the year (check). Milk Market: main market Saturday, smaller markets Friday and Sunday.

3 Bunratty Castle & Folk Park

Bunratty Castle & Folk Park

The most complete medieval castle in Ireland, built around 1425 and restored in the 1950s with period furniture and tapestries. Around it, the folk park reassembles farmhouses, a mill, a church and a whole nineteenth-century village street, with costumed staff baking bread and tending animals. Durty Nelly’s, by the bridge, has been a pub since 1620.

Practical: On the N18, 15 minutes from Limerick and 10 from Shannon Airport; buses stop at the gate. Ticketed. Allow 2–3 hours; last entry to the castle is usually mid-afternoon because of the banquets.

4 Adare

Adare

Often called Ireland’s prettiest village, Adare was laid out by the Earls of Dunraven in the nineteenth century with a row of thatched cottages, now shops and restaurants. It also has three medieval religious houses — one of them, the Trinitarian abbey, still the parish church — and the ruined Desmond Castle on the River Maigue. Adare Manor, the Dunravens’ neo-Gothic house, is now a luxury hotel and golf resort.

Practical: On the N21, 20–25 minutes south-west of Limerick on the road to Killarney. Free to wander; castle tours run in summer from the heritage centre. Traffic through the village is often slow.

5 Lough Gur

Lough Gur

A small horseshoe lake 20 km south of Limerick, surrounded by one of Ireland’s most important archaeological landscapes: Stone Age house sites, crannogs, a wedge tomb, two castles and the Grange Stone Circle of 113 stones, the largest in the country. A lakeside heritage centre in replica thatched huts explains it all.

Practical: About 30 minutes’ drive from Limerick; no convenient public transport. Lakeshore and stone circle free (honesty box at the circle); heritage centre ticketed.

6 Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum

In the late 1930s and 1940s, the Shannon Estuary port of Foynes was the European terminus for transatlantic flying boats. The museum, in the original terminal, has a full-scale replica of a Boeing 314 Clipper that you can board — and claims the invention of Irish coffee, first served here to chilled passengers in 1943.

Practical: About 40 minutes west of Limerick on the N69. Ticketed; open seasonally, roughly spring to autumn — check dates.
