When to go to Limerick & Shannon

A year-round stopover with a mild, damp climate; liveliest on rugby weekends and during the spring and summer festivals.

The Shannon region has a gentle, moist climate, a little drier than the Atlantic coast to the west. Most of what there is to see is indoors or close to shelter, so it makes a dependable stop in any month.

Season by season

Spring (March–May)

Longer days, the St Patrick’s Festival with its international band championship, and the Riverfest weekend at the start of May.

Summer (June–August)

Bunratty and Adare are at their busiest with touring coaches; evenings on the riverside are long and pleasant. Foynes and other seasonal sites are open.

Autumn (September–October)

The rugby season starts and the city fills on match weekends. Mild, with autumn colour at Adare and Lough Gur.

Winter (November–February)

Quiet and good value. Bunratty Folk Park puts on Christmas events; banquets continue on a reduced schedule.
