Things to see in Belfast

Titanic Belfast, the Victorian centre, the murals and peace walls, Crumlin Road Gaol, St George’s Market and the Queen’s Quarter.

Central Belfast is compact and flat. The Titanic Quarter is a 25-minute walk or a short Glider ride east across the river; the murals and the Gaol lie to the west and north and are best reached by tour, taxi or bus.

1 Titanic Belfast & the Titanic Quarter

Titanic Belfast & the Titanic Quarter

A star-shaped building clad in aluminium shards, the height of the Titanic’s hull, standing at the head of the slipways where she and her sister Olympic were built. Inside, galleries recreate the shipyard, the launch, the fit-out, the sinking and the discovery of the wreck. Outside you can walk the slipways, visit the tender SS Nomadic and see the dry dock and pump house. The yellow cranes Samson and Goliath stand beyond.

Practical: Timed tickets, best booked ahead. Allow 2.5–3 hours including the Nomadic. Glider G2 from the City Hall, or walk across the Lagan Weir bridge.

2 City Hall & the Victorian centre

City Hall & the Victorian centre

The domed City Hall of 1906 is the city’s centrepiece, with a free exhibition on Belfast’s history and a Titanic memorial garden. Close by are the ornate Crown Liquor Saloon, a gas-lit Victorian pub owned by the National Trust; the Grand Opera House; the Linen Hall Library; and the leaning Albert Clock.

Practical: City Hall exhibition free; free guided tours at set times. The Crown is a working pub — go mid-afternoon to find a seat in one of its snugs.

3 The murals & peace walls

The murals & peace walls

In west Belfast, the mainly nationalist and republican Falls Road and the mainly unionist and loyalist Shankill Road run roughly parallel, a few hundred metres apart. Their gable walls carry murals commemorating events and people from each community’s history, alongside newer ones on international and social themes. Between them runs the longest of the city’s peace walls, on Cupar Way, built from 1969 to separate the neighbourhoods; visitors from around the world have signed it. Gates in the wall are still closed at night.

Practical: Best visited with a guide. If you go independently, do so in daylight, be respectful when photographing memorials, and remember these are residential streets.

4 Crumlin Road Gaol

Crumlin Road Gaol

Opened in 1846 and closed in 1996, “the Crum” held suffragettes, republicans, loyalists and ordinary criminals alike; seventeen men were executed here. The visit includes the tunnel under the road to the derelict courthouse opposite, the circle and wings, and the hanging cell.

Practical: About 1.5 km north of the centre; ticketed. Allow 1.5–2 hours. A whiskey distillery now operates in one wing.

5 St George’s Market & the Cathedral Quarter

St George’s Market & the Cathedral Quarter

A red-brick Victorian market hall near the river, with fish, produce, street food, crafts and bands on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. North of the centre, the Cathedral Quarter around St Anne’s Cathedral is the old warehouse district, now the heart of the city’s nightlife: Commercial Court’s umbrella-strung alley, the Duke of York and a growing gallery of street art.

Practical: Market open Friday to Sunday, mornings to mid-afternoon; free. The MAC arts centre in the Cathedral Quarter is also free.

6 Queen’s Quarter, Ulster Museum & Botanic Gardens

South of the centre, the Tudor-Gothic Queen’s University fronts a district of terraces and cafés. Behind it, the Botanic Gardens have a curved-iron Palm House from the 1840s, and the Ulster Museum covers everything from dinosaurs and an Egyptian mummy to a careful gallery on the Troubles.

Practical: Museum and gardens free; museum closed on Mondays (check). About 20 minutes’ walk from City Hall, or a Metro bus.
