Donegal is the coolest, windiest and one of the wettest parts of Ireland, and its weather changes by the hour. Because the scenery is the whole point, visibility matters more here than anywhere: allow a spare day if you can.
Season by season
Spring (March–May)
Bright, cold and often dry in April and May. Lambs on the hills; many seasonal businesses reopen at Easter.
Summer (June–August)
Daylight until 10.30 pm or later, festivals in every village and the warmest sea. Even now, beaches are rarely crowded. Midges can be a nuisance inland.
Autumn (September–October)
Purple heather in September, the red deer rut at Glenveagh in October and big surf at Bundoran. Services begin to wind down.
Winter (November–February)
Gales, short days and closed guesthouses — but spectacular seas, snow on Errigal and the best chance of the aurora.

Crowds & booking ahead
Crowds are not a Donegal problem. The exceptions are Slieve League on fine summer afternoons, when the upper car park is closed to private cars, and Bundoran on bank-holiday weekends. From November to March, phone ahead: many hotels, restaurants and attractions outside the main towns close or open only at weekends.
