There is no railway on the Dingle Peninsula; the nearest station is Tralee. Most visitors drive in, either along the south coast via Inch or from Tralee on the N86. Buses reach Dingle town, but the Slea Head loop needs a car, a bike or a tour.

By car
The southern approach from Killarney via Inch is the prettier, hugging Dingle Bay. From Tralee you can take the main N86 or, in good weather and a small car, the Conor Pass via Castlegregory. Road signs in the western half of the peninsula are in Irish only: Dingle is An Daingean or Daingean Uí Chúis, Dunquin Dún Chaoin, Ventry Ceann Trá.
Driving Slea Head
- Follow the signposted route clockwise from Dingle via Ventry. The road is too narrow in places for two vehicles to pass, and coaches go this way.
- Expect to stop often — for views, for sheep and for oncoming cars at pinch points. Use the lay-bys rather than stopping on the road.
- Allow three to four hours for the loop with short stops, and bring cash for the small farm-gate charges at the forts and huts.
By bus and bike
Bus Éireann links Tralee and Dingle; a limited local service runs west towards Dunquin and Ballyferriter on some days. Cycling the Slea Head loop is hugely rewarding and takes most of a day — bike and e-bike hire is available in Dingle. The road is hilly and exposed, so check the wind forecast.
Getting around Dingle town
Everything is within ten minutes’ walk. Park at the harbour or the car park off Holyground and leave the car there. Taxis are few in number; book ahead for a late return to an out-of-town guesthouse.
