This is an exposed Atlantic coast. The weather changes fast, visibility is everything, and wind decides whether boats sail and paths open. The good news is that the cliffs are open all year and are spectacular in very different ways from month to month.
Season by season
Spring (March–May)
Seabirds return in April; in May the Burren is at its best, with spring gentians and early orchids in the limestone cracks. Boats start sailing around March.
Summer (June–August)
Peak season, with coach parks full at midday and light until after 10 pm. Puffins stay until about mid-July. Book Doolin accommodation well ahead.
Autumn (September–October)
Quieter and often clear, with big Atlantic swells for surfers at Lahinch. Lisdoonvarna fills for its matchmaking festival in September. Boats stop around the end of October.
Winter (November–February)
Short days and frequent gales. On a calm, clear winter day you may have the cliffs almost to yourself; on a stormy one the site may shut. Many B&Bs and some pubs close.
