The north coast is breezy, cool and bracing all year. It is slightly drier than the west of Ireland, but exposed: wind is what closes the rope bridge and makes the stones dangerous. Being so far north, midsummer evenings are especially long.
Season by season
Spring (March–May)
Seabirds return to the cliffs and Rathlin Island’s puffins arrive from late April. The North West 200 motorcycle races close coast roads for a few days in May.
Summer (June–August)
The busiest season, with coach parks full at midday, the Rambler bus running and daylight until about 10.30 pm in June. Book accommodation early.
Autumn (September–October)
Quieter, often with clear, golden light. Derry’s Halloween festival at the end of October is the biggest event of the year in the north-west.
Winter (November–February)
Short days and Atlantic storms, but few visitors. The Causeway stays open; the rope bridge and some attractions keep reduced hours or close in bad weather.

Crowds & booking ahead
The Giant’s Causeway receives around a million visitors a year, concentrated between 11 am and 3 pm from May to September. Outside those hours it can be surprisingly peaceful. When a major golf championship is played at Royal Portrush, rooms for miles around are booked a year or more ahead.
