Kerry’s climate is the mildest in Ireland — palm-like cabbage trees and fuchsia hedges thrive — and among the wettest. Clear spells between Atlantic fronts are luminous; plan to move your Ring of Kerry day to suit the forecast.
Season by season
Spring (March–May)
Rhododendrons flower in the park in May and the mountains are often clearest. Boats and seasonal attractions reopen from Easter.
Summer (June–August)
Everything is running, including Skellig boats. The Ring’s roads and Killarney’s streets are at their busiest; start days early.
Autumn (September–October)
The oakwoods turn and the red deer rut echoes around the lakes in October. September is usually mild and far quieter.
Winter (November–February)
Rarely cold, often wet and windy, with short days. Many hotels close for a spell in January; Christmas events brighten December.

Crowds & booking ahead
July and August bring coach traffic on the Ring from about 10 am to 5 pm and queues at Torc and Muckross at midday. Go early or in the evening. Skellig Michael’s short season means landing trips must be booked far ahead whatever the month.
